On the last day of the year King Abudullah of Saudi Arabia passed away at the age of 90 and shortly after his half-brother Crown Prince Salman was sworn in to be successor to the thrown.

According to news papers the change of monarch will be highly significant for Marbella as over the last 30 years the new king has spent part of his summer vacation at the Al-Riya palace on the Golden Mile, thus it is seen to be continuing in the years to come. His first wife who passed away in 2011 and three of his children previously resided in Marbella.

The visits by Salman Ibn Abdelaziz each summer brings not only status but is also of great importance to local businesses in Marbella. In the past an entourage of over a 100 people would follow the former crown princess, an entourage which for sure will increase due to his new title. The King usually stay at the palace, but the majority of guests opt for staying in surrounding luxurious villas or suites at the Marbella Club & Puente Romano. The visit is also welcomed by fashions shops, jewelers and local restaurants. Residents of Marbella still remember the former King Fahd’s visit in 2002 where he and his entourage of some 3,000 spend an estimated five million euros per day.

Some are cautious evaluating how much time the new King will be coming to Marbella, one being that his new responsibilities could prevent him from frequent trips, another due to the his recent links to Tangier where his now second wife resides in one of his palaces may therefore prove a major competitor as a holiday destination. Marbella has the advantage that several of his six children from the first marriage are habitual visitors in summer and it would be difficult for their father not to spend time with them and his many grandchildren. In fact one of the highlighted events of 2011 was the wedding of his grand-daughter Princess Sara Fahd.

In 2013 we saw the visit of the Royal Saudi Yacht in Marbella, although spotted in front of the many hot spot Golden Mile beach clubs it proved too big to enter Puerto Banus where the new King Salman’s yacht Shaf London is moored ready for a pending summer visit. Marbella keeps showing that it is most dwfinitely back.....
