Originally built and owned for many years by David Bowie, “Mandalay” – a Balinese Dream of a Holiday Retreat – is set in 6.2 acres of tropical private grounds perched on the hills above Britannia Bay on the island of Mustique.
The accommodation spans over 1500 m2 and throughout the property are many unique artefacts and sculptures which have been curated by the Estate’s owners. The entrance pavilion provides an impressive welcome. The main bungalow features five individually styled bedroom suites with private verandas leading to the stunning swimming pool areas. As well as bedrooms the Estate offers a drawing room, dining pavilion, games room and fully equipped music salon. There is also a library with over 3000 books and 2000 films. The Bamboo Lounge has a fully-stocked bar, so the ideal spot to unwind after a day of relaxation. Tucked away in the grounds – though with easy access to the main house – one finds; “The Writer’s Cottage” with an open-plan living and bedroom area, along with a bathroom, kitchenette and own terrace; - and “The Studio” originally a recording studio now converted in to a guest cottage with sitting room, kitchen and bedroom suite, along with its own balcony.
Moving to the outside of the property, the floating dining pavilion is guarded by two giant bird sculptures and has a central marble dining table shipped from Bali perfect for hosting lavish dining while savouring the magnificent views of the bay. The Estate centers around a beautiful Koi pond, a luxurious infinity pool and a children’s paddling pool combined with an abundance of verandas and terraces.
Mustique is a private island in the Caribbean owned by the island’s some 120 villa owners. Princess Margaret and David Bowie/Mick Jagger did not have much in common but together their parties and friends gave it its wild, Jet Set image. Known for its white sandy beaches, Britannia Bay is located on the island’s West coast and is home to a collection of small shops and fruit stalls nearby to the tiny village of Lovell.
The services include a dedicated team of 10 staff including 2 house managers, butler, chef, housekeepers, 2 gardeners and a maintenance man. Also, one is offered Mules (golf buggies) to travel around the island.
